How to diagnose pressing issues
Most garment DTF pressing problems involve temperature, time, pressure, moisture, garment compatibility, or peel timing. Start by confirming the selected film instructions, then change one variable at a time on a test garment.
Start with evidence: Note the film, garment, actual platen temperature, time, pressure, peel timing and wash method. A photo plus those details makes diagnosis much faster.
Quick checks before another test
1.Is the garment dry and flat? → Follow the permitted preparation routine
2.Has the platen temperature been checked? → Use the press manufacturer’s test method
3.Are you using the exact settings for the selected film? → Check the film guide and supplied instructions
4.Is pressure even across the full platen? → Use the press manufacturer’s pressure-check method
5.Does the selected film require a finish press? → If yes, follow its stated time and cover material
These checks help prevent the next failure; they do not guarantee a repair. Do not keep reheating a peeling, cracked or discoloured print. Stop the batch, keep the affected item and contact us with your order number, photos and settings. If clean source artwork prints with a halo, send both the file and a photo so we can check the print as well.
Edges lifting or peeling after wash
Common
Likely causes
- Insufficient pressure during pressing — edges need full contact
- Moisture trapped in the garment (skipped pre-press)
- Required finish press was missed
- The selected film settings were not followed
Solutions
- Start with a dry garment and use the pre-press routine permitted by the garment and transfer instructions
- Set the pressure specified for the film and check for even contact
- Complete the product-specific finish press when instructed
- Confirm the exact film temperature, time and peel direction before adjusting anything
- Check that your press applies even pressure across the full platen area
Prevention: Test the actual film and garment together, pre-press when instructed, and record the proven product-specific settings.
Print looks dull, faded, or washed out
Common
Likely causes
- Excess heat or pressing time damaged the finish
- Artwork exported with wrong colour profile (Adobe RGB, CMYK, or P3 instead of sRGB)
- Heavy JPEG compression reduced colour fidelity in the source file
- Artwork designed for screen looked vivid on a wide-gamut monitor but exceeded printable gamut
Solutions
- Confirm the supplied film settings and verify the platen temperature before making adjustments
- Test one controlled change at a time without moving outside the product instructions
- Re-export artwork as sRGB PNG (not JPEG)
- Check source file isn't over-compressed (use PNG or high-quality TIFF)
Prevention: Use sRGB colour profile, export as PNG, and verify platen temperature using the press manufacturer’s method.
Carrier film tears or doesn't peel cleanly
Moderate
Likely causes
- Peeling at the wrong temperature for the film
- Temperature, time or pressure does not match the selected film
- Carrier was pulled too vertically or with uneven force
- Garment seams created uneven pressure beneath the design
Solutions
- Check the supplied warm- or cold-peel direction before removing the carrier
- Peel smoothly and low to the surface
- Ensure temperature, time and pressure match the selected film
- If the film sticks, stop and contact us before repeatedly reheating a speciality finish
Prevention: Match the peel timing to the selected film and keep the carrier removal smooth, low and controlled.
White box or halo around the design
Common
Likely causes
- Background is not truly transparent — a white or coloured background was baked into the file
- File saved as JPEG (which doesn't support transparency)
- Anti-aliasing created a semi-transparent fringe that prints as a white halo
- Screenshot or web image used instead of source artwork
Solutions
- Re-export as PNG-24 with transparency enabled
- Check the file in a viewer that shows the checkerboard pattern
- Refine the edge on a copy in an image editor and inspect it on light and dark backgrounds
- Source higher-quality artwork — don't use screenshots or web images
Prevention: Always use PNG with true transparency. Test by placing the file on a coloured background in any image editor.
Garment dye bleeding into the white areas of the transfer
Moderate
Likely causes
- Temperature too high for polyester or dye-sublimated garments
- Dark polyester (especially red, royal blue, and black) releases dye when heated
- Extended pressing time at high temperature accelerates migration
Solutions
- Stop production and confirm the film can be applied within the garment's safe heat range
- Use a tested compatible lower-temperature process only where the film instructions allow it
- Choose a more suitable garment or contact us for product-specific guidance if the ranges do not overlap
- Test with a small piece before running a full batch
Prevention: Always test dark polyester before production and never trade away the film's required adhesion setting without validating the result.
Transfer cracks or peels after washing
Moderate
Likely causes
- Insufficient adhesion from under-pressing (temperature, time, or pressure too low)
- Required finish press was missed
- Garment was washed incorrectly (hot wash, tumble dry, direct ironing on print)
- Over-stretching the garment before pressing
Solutions
- Verify press settings match the selected film instructions
- Complete the specified finish press
- Follow wash care guidelines: cold wash inside out, no direct heat on print
- Don't overstretch garments before pressing — allow natural drape
Prevention: Correct film settings, a compatible garment, the specified finish press and proper wash care give the best durability.
Rough, raised, or rubbery texture
Low
Likely causes
- Heavy ink coverage areas (full white + full CMYK) naturally have more texture
- Under-pressing leaves the adhesive layer partially un-bonded
- The specified finish press was missed or used with the wrong cover material
Solutions
- Use the finish-press time and cover material specified for the selected film
- Ensure the specified pressure is even during the initial press
- Remember that glitter, metallic, reflective and holographic films intentionally have different surface textures
Prevention: Use the correct cover material and judge the result against the intended finish of the selected film.
Garment discolouration or scorch marks
Serious
Likely causes
- Temperature too high for the fabric type
- Pressing time too long
- The fabric or coating cannot tolerate the application heat or pressure
- Press temperature display is inaccurate (reads lower than actual)
Solutions
- Stop production and compare the garment heat limit with the selected film instructions
- Verify the platen temperature before trying another sample
- Use the cover sheet specified for the transfer; it cannot prevent damage from unsuitable heat
- Use heat-press test strips or a contact probe as directed by the press manufacturer
Prevention: Verify temperature, garment compatibility and the specified cover sheet before pressing a test piece.
Sticker and cut-line issues
- Contour looks noisy: remove stray pixels and rough edges, then recheck the complete cut preview. Red disconnected pieces will be excluded; increase the border or use a fixed shape to retain them.
- Circle or shape has too much space: remove unwanted transparent padding and confirm the preview is fitting the visible artwork.
- Sticker lifts: clean and dry the surface, avoid very cold application, press from the centre out, and allow 24 hours before washing or heavy handling.
- Bubbles appear: lift only if the vinyl and surface allow repositioning, then smooth outward slowly. Avoid applying over dust, texture, seams or deep curves.
- UV DTF carrier lifts the design: lay it back down, rub firmly again with overlapping strokes, and peel low and slowly. Do not heat press it.
