DTF Pressing Guide
A Standard DTF baseline, speciality-film rules, and a repeatable test process for compatible garments.

Standard DTF: step by step
SpeedShirt’s general starting settings for Standard DTF are 150–160°C, firm even pressure, and 10–15 seconds. The instructions supplied with the selected product always take priority, including the garment compatibility, cover sheet, peel timing and finish press. If instructions are missing or unclear, contact us before pressing.
Prepare the garment
Lint-roll the fabric and lay it flat without stretching. Pre-press for 5–10 seconds where the garment and transfer instructions allow, to reduce moisture and creases.
Position the transfer
Place the adhesive/printed side against the fabric, with the clear carrier on top. Keep seams, zips and other raised areas outside the pressing area. Use the cover sheet specified for the transfer.
Press at the product setting
For Standard DTF, begin at 150–160°C for 10–15 seconds with firm, even pressure. Use the supplied setting instead whenever it differs.
Settle, then peel as directed
For the Standard DTF baseline, wait at least 3 seconds, then follow the supplied warm- or cold-peel instruction. Cold peel means waiting until fully cool, not just 3 seconds. Peel smoothly back over itself.
Finish press
For Standard DTF, cover the print with parchment and press again for 10 seconds. Use the product-specific finish instruction for speciality films.
Choose settings by transfer film
Film chemistry determines the application settings. Do not assume that one temperature or peel direction applies to the complete range.

Check the garment before production
Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, coated performance fabrics and heavy textiles do not all react to heat in the same way. Confirm that the garment can tolerate the film's required setting, then test for scorching, platen marks, dye migration and adhesion before running the full batch.
Heat press types
Use a heat press that can maintain the required temperature and even pressure over the entire design in one press. A household iron cannot provide the same controlled application.
Clamshell press
- Most common entry-level press
- Check contact across the platen, especially on thick garments
- Calibrate pressure and check adhesion across the entire platen
- Choose a platen size that covers the whole transfer
Swing-away press
- The upper platen swings away from the loading area
- Allow enough space around the press for its movement
- Easier to position transfers accurately
- Check pressure and temperature as with any press
Auto-open / draw press
- Auto-open models release at the end of the timer
- Draw-type platens make positioning fast and repeatable
- A slide-out drawer does not necessarily include auto-open
- Follow the machine instructions for loading and pressure
Speciality presses
- Use a compatible press and platen for caps, sleeves or pockets
- Ensure even contact — curved surfaces need attention
- Use smaller transfer sizes that fit the platen
- Keep within the transfer and garment application settings
Four settings and conditions to check
These checks help you repeat a successful application. Film condition, peel timing, garment coatings and dyes also matter.
Temperature
Check the platen using the press manufacturer’s test method, such as heat-press test strips or a suitable contact probe. Infrared guns can give misleading readings on platen surfaces. Wait for the press to reach its setting.
Time
Pressing time should be measured from when the press is fully closed with pressure applied. Pre-warming the garment doesn't count. Under-pressing causes poor adhesion; over-pressing leads to dull colours and texture issues.
Pressure
Firm, even pressure is critical. Inconsistent pressure causes edge lift, partial transfer failure, and texture variations. Follow your press manufacturer’s pressure-check method. A gauge reading is specific to that machine; it is not a universal setting.
Moisture
Moisture can affect adhesion. Keep the garment dry and follow the permitted pre-press routine. Do not compensate for a damp garment by repeatedly heating the transfer.
Pre-press preparation
Before each batch, check the following:
- Lint-roll the garment — fibres, dust, and debris under the transfer cause imperfections and poor adhesion.
- Prepare a dry, flat garment — pre-press within the garment and transfer instructions; stop if the fabric marks or discolours.
- Check the platen temperature — especially on cold starts or after switching press settings. Use the manufacturer’s temperature-check method.
- Position the transfer carefully — use alignment tools, rulers, or marking techniques for consistent placement across a batch.
- Use the specified cover sheet — covers affect heat transfer and finish. They do not make a heat-sensitive garment safe at an unsuitable temperature.
The finish press
A finish press improves adhesion and feel when it is part of the selected film's application instructions. Do not add extra heat cycles to a speciality finish unless instructed.
- Follow the full process — complete the finish press when the product requires it.
- Check the finish — the specified cover sheet can help produce the intended surface texture.
- Cool before handling — let the garment cool flat before folding or packing.
Standard DTF: After peeling the carrier, cover the print with parchment and press again for 10 seconds. For speciality film, use the supplied finish-press time, temperature and cover material.
Common pressing mistakes

Skipping the pre-press

Follow the warm- or cold-peel direction supplied with the selected film and peel smoothly at a low angle.

Incorrect or uneven pressure
Fix
Use the specified even pressure. Too little can lift edges; too much can mark garments or distort a special finish.

Pressing on seams or zippers without a pillow
Fix
Use a pressing pillow to even out surface differences. Seams create pressure shadows.

Dry the garment and follow the permitted preparation routine before application.
Advanced tips for production
- Batch by fabric type — group jobs using the same verified transfer and garment settings. Reduces errors and speeds up throughput.
- Mark a “home position” — use heat tape or a positioning jig to place transfers in the same spot on every garment.
- Rotate platens if available — a dual-platen press can let you load one garment while another is pressing. Keep the loading area clear and follow the machine instructions.
- Keep a pressing log — record the settings that work for each garment type/brand. This saves time on repeat orders and reduces waste.
- Test new garments first — before running a full batch on a garment you haven't used before, press a test piece, allow the specified wait before washing, then wash and inspect it. Check polyester for delayed dye migration as well as immediate marks.
